Happy Birthday to Bernie Taupin

Elton John’s long-time songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin, turns 69 today.

In honour of the occasion, we are sharing Bernie's lyrics to (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again, the duo's latest work from the soundtrack to ROCKETMAN.

Written especially for the film and sung as a duet by Elton with ROCKETMAN star, Taron Egerton, (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again is Elton and Bernie’s 399th collaboration to date.

As depicted in the film, Elton and Bernie began writing songs together in 1967 – first by post (between Elton in Pinner and Bernie in Lincolnshire) and then soon in person, although never side-by-side. Uniquely, Bernie writes the lyrics first and then Elton adds the music, even if it is just in the adjoining room or, in later years, half-way around the world.

Portrayed in Rocketman by Jamie Bell, who played Billy Elliot in the 2000 film, Bernie’s character provides the counterweight to Elton’s increasingly unstable personality. Their brotherly relationship is touchingly depicted in the film and summed up with Bell responding to Egerton’s, “Bernie, I never told you how much I need you.” with, “I love you, man…always have, always will.”

Avid fans of Bernie’s lyrics will pick up references to Elton’s 1989 album and song, Sleeping With The Past and the 1983 anthem I’m Still Standing – the latter of which is included in the film.

Rocketman opens in UK cinemas on Friday, May 24, the same day as Rocketman: Music From The Motion Picture is released worldwide. The film opens in the US on May 31.

(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again

(Elton)
Oh, the joke was never hard to tell
Threw my spare change in the wishing well
The dream alone is always in your hand
It’s there to fill the boy and build the man

A house has many secrets, so I’m told
Through the years a theory can grow cold
I’m up to speed, the cane is cut and clear
The voice inside my head’s the one I hear

Saying

(Both)
I’m gonna love me again
Check in on my very best friend
Find the wind and fill my sails
Rise above the broken rails
Unbound by any ties that break or bend
I’m free and don’t you know?
No clown to claim he used to know me then
I’m free and don’t you know?
And oh, oh, oh – I’m gonna love me again

(Taron)
The golden age was somehow bittersweet
But now the past lies sleeping in the deep
The peaceful days that followed hollow nights
A kiss or touch could feel like kryptonite

Praise the saints that hung up on my wall
For trust is love and love is after all
A whispered word emerging from a tear
My wake-up call to claim the coast is clear

(Chorus)

(Chorus)
