“I’m spellbound by the game.” (2012)

Like many an Englishman who finds himself in the US for much of the time, Elton has become a devotee of baseball. He describes himself as, “An Englishman spellbound by the skill and beauty of the game.”

He’s a keen Atlanta Braves fan, having bought a house in Atlanta in 1991. Earlier this year, he was moved to write a tribute when Braves’ third baseman Chipper Jones brought the curtain down on his 19-year career. One of his comments again highlighted the crossover between sport and music, “The Braves without Chipper is like Lennon minus McCartney, Rogers without Hammerstein.”

He expanded on the analogy when attending a round-table interview by and with some of the Braves’ recent greats earlier this year, “Just like music, people will always go and see big stars play sports, because it’s exciting, it’s live, it’s happening. Live music, live sports, the moment is never going to happen again — the performance won’t be the same the next time.”

It’s that commitment to bringing unique performances to audiences throughout the world which has been a contributory factor to Elton’s continued success and popularity.
