In the early 1970s I was living in Los Angeles, which was convenient for occasional visits to Caribou Ranch in Colorado when Elton was recording there. During the Captain Fantastic sessions, John Lennon came to hang out for a while, and it led to the recording of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds. Gus was understanding enough to allow me into the actual recording studio, where just Elton and John were wrapped up in arranging the piece. I think Gus realised I was discreet enough to take photographs of the two of them without interrupting their creative process. Though I’m sure that Gus was also eager to crack on with things, he was thoughtful in allowing me time to get enough shots before his, “Right, Larkham — out of there, or the mikes will pick up the camera clicks.” I always appreciated Gus’s sensitivity and patience in that situation. Many other producers would have been very precious and officious about a recording session involving those two legends, and simply would not have allowed that interruption.
